Fancy discovering a charming corner of nature during your trip to Málaga ? Just outside the city, the La Concepción Botanical-Historical Garden awaits, a true oasis where you can travel from one continent to another without leaving the province. Stroll among palm trees, discover exotic species, and be captivated by its romantic 19th-century corners. What's more, when Christmas arrives, its paths are transformed into a spectacular light show. In this guide, we tell you everything you need to know to plan your visit: tickets, opening hours, prices, and how to get there by car.

A subtropical garden on the outskirts of Malaga

La Concepción began as a country estate for Jorge Loring and Amalia Heredia in the mid-19th century. Today, it's a historic garden open to the public and one of Málaga's most special green spaces. If you enjoy discovering places steeped in history, here you can combine a stroll with admiring the architecture of a former stately home.

Before becoming a garden, these lands were used for various crops. Over time, their owners transformed the estates into a landscape of paths, ponds, and trees from other regions. Some of that character is still recognizable when you stroll through the historic garden.

The arrival of species from other climates and their adaptation to Málaga was an important part of the creation of La Concepción. That's why you'll find plants that aren't usually seen together in a typical urban park. It's a good reason to take a closer look at the botanical areas and not just rely on photographs.

From country estate to public garden

The estate changed hands at the beginning of the 20th century. The Echevarría-Echevarrieta family added new spaces and helped shape some of the routes you can visit today. The garden thus preserves different stages of its history within the same setting.

After years of changes, the Málaga City Council acquired the estate in 1990 and opened it to the public in 1994. Thanks to this, you can explore spaces that for a long time belonged to a private owner. Consult the official history of the garden if you want to learn more about its evolution.

La Concepción is a protected heritage site and is much more than just a collection of plants. The Casa Palacio, the historic walkways, and the outbuildings are all part of its identity. I recommend setting aside time to explore these elements as well.

Palm trees, bamboo, and around the world in 80 trees

The variety of plants is one of La Concepción's greatest attractions. The garden boasts tens of thousands of plants and collections from diverse origins. You can explore them without being a botany expert: start in the areas that appeal to you most and follow the marked paths.

Among the collections you'll find palm trees, bamboo, aquatic plants, cacti, and other plant groups. Each area has its own unique appeal. If you're visiting with children, a great idea is to choose some unusual plants and turn your visit into a mini scavenger hunt.

Around the World in 80 Trees is one of the garden's offerings for discovering species from different parts of the world. Its design provides a cohesive theme throughout the walk. Check the official itinerary and decide if you'd like to dedicate part of your visit to it.

In the historic area, highlights include the waterfall, the Nymph's Pond, and the wisteria-covered gazebo. The blooms change with the seasons, so they won't always look the same. Even so, they are worth exploring for their surroundings and history.

The garden also preserves elements related to the old water supply, such as remains of the San Telmo aqueduct. These are details that might go unnoticed if you only look for the most photographed spots, but they help to understand how the estate functioned.

Routes to avoid getting lost in such a large garden

Before entering, decide how much you want to walk. You can focus on the historic garden, explore the botanical collections, or follow a themed route. My recommendation for a first visit is not to try to see everything in a rush, as this garden is much more enjoyable when you take your time.

If you fancy a longer walk, look for the trails that climb to the viewpoints. From some areas, you can admire Málaga and its surroundings. Check which routes are open and keep in mind that some sections are steep.

The length of your visit depends on the route you choose. You can spend a morning exploring the main areas or extend your visit if you're interested in the collections and viewpoints. Wear comfortable shoes and don't over-plan if you want to enjoy the stops.

If you're planning a multi-day trip to the city, our three-day Malaga guide can help you combine the garden with other places of interest without unnecessary detours.

You can also visit La Concepción on a guided tour. The garden offers various options, usually requiring prior booking, and provides contact information to check availability. If you're interested in a specific tour, please check dates and prices directly with the garden.

To explore on your own, consult the garden map and its recommended routes. If you need to rest or get something to eat or drink, check the facilities available near the entrance. On busy days, it's best to arrive early.

You can visit the garden with your dog as long as you respect its access conditions, including the use of a leash. The grounds publish regulations and a compliance document. We recommend consulting them before visiting with your pet.

Christmas Lights: Christmas in the Garden of Oz

During the 2026-2027 Christmas season, La Concepción presents Christmas in the Garden of Oz, a nighttime light tour. This activity has its own tickets and schedule, separate from the daytime botanical tour. If you wish to experience both, you will need to book each separately.

The Christmas display transforms several areas of the garden with lighting and themed scenes. Importantly, this isn't your typical visit with the lights on: the experience is organized as a show with admission tickets .

Before purchasing, check which areas are included that year and how long the tour lasts. The organizers may change the itinerary and access conditions. This will allow you to choose the best time and plan your return journey.

Dates, passes and prices for the lights

The announced season runs from November 27, 2026, to January 6, 2027. Nighttime access is organized in shifts, with specific entry times. Please check the official event website to choose your day and session; do not use the daytime opening hours as a reference.

Tickets for the show can be purchased through authorized channels. Some sessions may sell out, so we recommend checking availability in advance. Please save your confirmation and review the access instructions before leaving.
