Alcalá de Henares is one of those destinations that has everything you need for a two-day getaway: history, charming streets, excellent cuisine, and corners that transport you to another era. Just over half an hour from Madrid, this city, birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), invites you to stroll at a leisurely pace, discover its impressive heritage, and be surprised around every corner.
If you're someone who loves to have everything organized, you're in the right place! In this guide, I'll tell you what to see in Alcalá de Henares in a weekend and recommend what to eat, how to get there, and where to park to make your visit a success.
As the author of this article, I have to confess something: Alcalá de Henares is going to steal your heart. And I say this because I've been there. Perhaps it's its historical atmosphere or that special connection to literature that you feel as you stroll through the city center. The truth is, Cervantes is much more present here than you might imagine, and discovering his birthplace is a wonderful way to connect with his legacy.
Below, I've listed my must-sees in Alcalá de Henares, from Cervantes-related sites to historical monuments.
10:30 a.m. - Plaza de Cervantes and Corral de Comedias
If there's one place worth starting your exploration of Alcalá de Henares, it's the Plaza de Cervantes. There, the writer's statue will greet you in a tranquil setting, reminding you that you're about to discover a city where history and literature go hand in hand.
Just a short walk from the square is the Corral de Comedias, one of the oldest theaters in Europe (1602). Within its walls, you can imagine how audiences of bygone eras enjoyed the theater, when the plays of Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca captivated the stage.
Don't leave without seeing it inside. Check the schedule for guided tours or the program of performances, and if you have the chance, enjoy a show.
11:30 a.m. - Cervantes' Birthplace and Main Street
If there's one thing you absolutely can't miss during your visit to Alcalá de Henares, it's the Cervantes Birthplace Museum (my absolute must-see). Located right on Calle Mayor, this house-museum invites you to travel back to the 16th century and discover what Cervantes' daily life was like. Don't forget to check the opening hours before you go, and take advantage of the fact that admission is free !
12:45 pm - Magistral Cathedral and the Plaza de los Santos Niños
The Magistral Cathedral of Saints Justus and Pastor stands out for its Gothic architecture and its close connection to the history of Alcalá. The cathedral is located in the Plaza de los Santos Niños, an ideal spot to pause and contemplate the historic surroundings and enjoy the tranquility of the old town.
After a morning exploring monuments, it's time to recharge. Alcalá is a great place to enjoy tapas. You can head to places like Indalo Tapas or La Pinta and share some portions of croquettes, huevos rotos (broken eggs), or migas (fried breadcrumbs). My advice is to choose a centrally located spot so you can continue your walking tour.
4:00 PM - Archbishop's Palace and Archaeological Museum
The Archbishop's Palace is one of those places that catches your attention just by looking at its facade, full of history and secrets that have accompanied Alcalá de Henares for centuries.
Just a short walk away, you'll find the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum, where you can discover fossils, mosaics, and archaeological remains that help you understand what life was like in this region thousands of years ago. Check their exhibitions and opening hours to plan your visit.
6:00 PM - Afternoon snack on Libreros Street
In the mid-afternoon, Libreros Street is the perfect place to take a break and soak up the atmosphere of Alcalá de Henares. Take the opportunity to order a coffee with some traditional doughnuts and stroll leisurely through its shops and streets before continuing your route.
9:00 PM - Dinner in Alcalá de Henares
After a long day of running around, it's time to sit down and enjoy a nice dinner. I recommend booking a table at Restaurante Casino, perfect for enjoying traditional dishes in an elegant setting.
The second day we will dedicate to discovering another side of Alcalá de Henares, its university tradition, some surprising buildings and the traces left by the Romans long before Cervantes became one of its most illustrious residents.
10:00 a.m. - University of Alcalá
The University of Alcalá is one of the city's must-see attractions. Founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros, it is renowned for its spectacular Plateresque façade and spaces steeped in history, such as the Paraninfo, where the Cervantes Prize is awarded annually, and the Trilingual Courtyard, a beautiful corner that reflects the university's humanist spirit. This entire complex, along with the historic center of Alcalá, was declared a World Heritage Site byUNESCOin 1998 .
If you want to discover its interior, check the guided tour schedules and take the opportunity to get to know one of the places that marked the cultural and academic history of Spain.
12:00 pm - Laredo Palace
The Laredo Palace is striking for its Neo-Mudéjar architecture, colorful tiles, and intricately detailed decor. Step inside and discover its rooms, and be amazed by this special corner of Alcalá.
For your last meal in Alcalá, I recommend Fino Bar. There you can try croquettes, patatas bravas, or torreznos (crispy pork belly). It's a good choice if you prefer to sample several dishes instead of ordering a main course.
4:00 p.m. - Roman city of Complutum
Did you know that the Romans inhabited Alcalá long before Cervantes? Just a few minutes from the city center, you can visit Complutum, the ancient Roman city, and discover its archaeological remains. Admission is free, but don't forget to check the updated opening hours .
6:00 PM - Last stroll and Alcalá de Henares festival
End your weekend getaway in Alcalá by strolling through the arcades of Calle Mayor (my favorite place to walk) and trying its typical sweet treat.
The Alcalá crust
If you can't skip dessert, you have to try the costrada de Alcalá, a traditional sweet that combines layers of crispy puff pastry, custard, meringue, and toasted almonds. You have to try it, trust me!
If you're traveling by car, the main access route is the A-2, which connects Madrid with Alcalá de Henares (30 minutes). Before setting off, check the route and any traffic restrictions in the historic center.
By the way, if you have more time, you can take advantage of the getaway to discover other beautiful towns near Madrid .
Where to park in Alcalá de Henares
If you're visiting Alcalá de Henares by car, finding a good place to park will allow you to explore its historic center more easily. Although some streets in the old town have traffic restrictions, there are public parking lots available.
If you want to park for free : try Eras del Silo or Pico del Obispo, checking the access conditions.
If you want to be right in the center : the Market Parking is a practical option.
If you prefer covered parking : you can choose San Lucas.
The answer is yes. If you want to explore Alcalá de Henares and its surroundings with complete freedom, renting a car can be a very practical option. It will allow you to visit nearby places of interest without depending on public transport schedules.
