As you arrive, you'll be greeted by the dramatic Basilica of Santa María la Real, set against a beautiful green mountain backdrop. Entry to this unique church is completely free. However, don't expect to find the 'Santina' (Our Lady of Covadonga) inside the main church, to see her, you'll need to keep exploring. Right next door, you can visit the Covadonga Museum, with entry costing around 3€.

Perched directly above a natural waterfall lies the Holy Cave (Santa Cueva), home to the Santina (the patron saint of Asturias) and the tomb of King Pelagius. Taking photographs isn't allowed inside, but it is well worth the visit.

As you leave, head down the steps to the Seven Spouts Fountain (Fuente de los Siete Caños) directly below. Local legend has it that drinking from its waters means you'll be married within a year! And before heading back to your car, don't forget to pop into the Sanctuary's official gift shop to pick up a souvenir.

Where to Park at the Sanctuary of Covadonga

There are several free, designated car parks available when visiting this area. It's one of the most convenient options, although spaces tend to fill up fast during peak season. Because of this, it's best to arrive early, though our top tip is to visit the Lakes of Covadonga first and then stop by the Sanctuary on your way back down.

What to See in Cangas de Onís

The perfect final stop to round off your day trip from Oviedo after coming down from the lakes is Cangas de Onís.

Its most iconic landmark is the Roman Bridge, with the Victory Cross hanging over the River Sella. The town's historic centre is also ideal for a stroll, where you can visit the Church of the Assumption or the Market Square (Plaza del Mercado).
