Have a couple of days off and fancy discovering Murcia? Here's our guide to the best things to do in Murcia in a weekend, so you can make the most of your trip.

At DoYouSpain, we've put together a route covering the places that are really worth your time. We've also included prices and opening hours where you need them, so you don't miss a thing.

Is Murcia Worth Visiting for a Weekend?

Yes, and two days go a long way. A weekend in Murcia is enough to see the highlights without rushing, since many of its landmarks are close to one another.

What's more, you don't need to wait for a special date, because there's always something going on. Murcia at Christmas fills up with lights, nativity scenes and Christmas markets, with the Giant Tree in Plaza Circular as the star attraction. And Murcia in spring has its own festivals: right after Easter come the Bando de la Huerta and the Burial of the Sardine.

Day 1: Exploring Murcia on Foot

Spend your first day exploring Murcia on foot. Start at the Cathedral, head down to the Segura River, stop by the Verónicas Market and the Real Casino, and finish the afternoon at the Salzillo Museum. If you're arriving in a rental car, leave it in the Glorieta de España car park, just two minutes from the Cathedral, and start the route from there.

Murcia Cathedral and Plaza Belluga

The Cathedral of Santa María is one of Murcia's most iconic landmarks and the best starting point for your weekend in the city. Its Baroque façade alone is worth the visit, but it's well worth paying the €6 entrance fee to see the Gothic interior.

When you come out, you'll be in Plaza Belluga, the heart of Murcia: pedestrianised, lined with bars and cafés, and always buzzing. Check the city council's website before your visit, as concerts and open-air events are often held here.

Boat Trip on the Segura River

One of the most unusual things to do in Murcia is take a boat ride on the Segura River. Next to the 18th-century Puente de los Peligros, you'll spot the wooden hut of El Tío de la Barca, where the trips depart. For around €8–9 and with no need to book, you'll glide under the bridge in a rowing boat or an eco-friendly boat. Kids love it.

Verónicas Market

Right by the river is the Mercado de Verónicas, Murcia's main food market. Its bars are perfect for tasting local produce, and inside there's a cookery classroom where the city council runs classes several times a week.

Top tip : buy fresh fish at Pescadería Cristóbal, which has great prices, and the bar opposite will cook it for you on the spot.

Real Casino de Murcia

murcia-4

Walk up Calle Trapería, one of the most traditional streets in the old town. It's a shopping street, perfect for a bit of retail therapy or a drink, and it's where you'll find the Real Casino de Murcia. Inside, every room has a different architectural style, and that's what makes it so special.

It's open daily from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm. General admission costs €6, audio guide included.

Day 2: Things to Do in and Around Murcia

Spend Sunday morning soaking up Murcia's culture in its museums. Then hop in your rental car and say goodbye to the city from its best viewpoints. And if you're left wanting more, make the most of your trip to discover the most charming villages in Murcia.

Santa Clara Museum

The Santa Clara Museum is built on the site of the former palace of Murcia's Muslim emirs, and it preserves one of the oldest Arab water pools in Spain, surrounded by gardens. A fun fact: the convent is still home to a community of nuns.

Entry is free, and on Sundays it opens from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. To get even more out of your visit, book a free guided tour by calling 968 27 23 98.

Santa Eulalia City Wall

A short walk from the Santa Clara Museum is the Santa Eulalia Wall Interpretation Centre, which preserves remains of the medieval Islamic and Christian walls that once surrounded Murcia. Scale models and audiovisuals show you what the city used to look like, and a walkway lets you stroll right alongside the original wall.

Floridablanca Garden

Its century-old ficus trees provide shade all year round, and it has a children's playground, making it a great place to take a break if you're travelling with kids.

Monteagudo Castle

murcia-5

Once you're done, get in your rental car and head to the district of Monteagudo. This Islamic-era fortress is crowned by a monumental statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It may be closed for restoration when you visit, but the views alone make the trip worthwhile.

The easiest way to get up there is by car, so you don't have to rely on bus timetables, especially if you're travelling with children or older relatives. That's why renting a car in Murcia is the best option for this part of the trip. If it's your first time, read our reviews and tips for renting a car in Murcia .

Fuensanta Sanctuary

murcia-6

End your weekend at the Sanctuary of La Fuensanta, in the district of Algezares, south of the city. It sits within the El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park, surrounded by pine trees and mountains, with views over the whole of Murcia. There's a free car park right by the entrance, so getting there with your rental car in Murcia couldn't be easier. If you're left wanting more, discover the best road trips in Murcia.
