A road trip through Cádiz: 3 days exploring the most beautiful spots

cadiz-1

Cádiz is one of the oldest cities in Europe and, while it’s steeped in history, what truly captures your heart is its people, the Andalusian spirit, and the incredible food. It’s a place of crystal-clear waters and streets overflowing with flowers.

If you want to understand why life just feels different in the south, you have to visit! You won’t find that salty sea breeze or such a unique kitchen just anywhere. In this blog, we’re suggesting a 3-day itinerary so you can see the essentials and truly fall in love with Cádiz.

Day 1: Cádiz city and its surroundings

Start in the capital, but here’s a tip: the best bits of the province aren’t always on display, and many magical corners lie just outside the centre. To make the most of the experience, hire a car with DoYouSpain and move at your own pace. Once you’ve got the keys, get ready to discover the true essence of Andalusia.

The historic centre of Cádiz

When you arrive in the city centre, leave the car in the car parks at the Port or Campo del Sur. These are ideal because the streets in the old town are pedestrianised and very narrow; it’s much easier to explore the city on foot.

In the heart of the city lies the Barrio del Populo, where you’ll find the Roman Theatre and the famous Cadiz Cathedral. You can't miss the Torre Tavira, either. It’s the highest point in town, and its Camara Oscura projects a moving image of the city. The views are definitely worth a visit.

Once you head back down, make your way to the Plaza de las Flores. It’s buzzing with life, flower stalls, and iconic buildings. It’s the perfect spot to soak up the atmosphere and try the famous churros or the local pescaíto frito (fried fish).

La Caleta Beach

Walking through the La Viña neighbourhood brings you to La Caleta, right in the city centre. It’s one of the most authentic spots in Cádiz. Seeing the little boats bobbing between the castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastián creates a unique vibe.

There are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby. It’s a perfect destination in both winter and summer, as the scenery is something you simply shouldn't miss.

Stroll by the port

As the sun begins to set, take the car towards the Alameda Apodaca. This is a promenade lined with giant ficus trees where, from the stone railings, you can watch the whole bay and the ships coming and going.

If you’ve still got some energy left, wander along the Paseo Marítimo. They call it 'Little Havana' because of its resemblance to the Malecón in Cuba. It’s the ideal place to end the day with some incredible views.

Day 2: Villages and the coast

Once you leave the city, head south. This is where you’ll really enjoy having a hire car, driving along coastal roads where the views are stunning.

Conil de la Frontera

Conil is a typical fishing village full of whitewashed houses. Park up near the promenade and lose yourself in its streets.

The tuna from Conil is the most famous in the region; spend the day at one of its coves and stop for a bite at one of the local restaurants.

Vejer de la Frontera

Just a few minutes away by car, you’ll reach Vejer. For many, it’s the most beautiful village in Cádiz, and since it sits atop a hill, the views from any lookout point are impressive.

It’s full of white houses, courtyards bursting with flowers, and ancient walls. The best thing to do is park at the entrance and take a leisurely walk through every corner of the old town. Don’t forget to swing by the Plaza de España; its blue tiles are iconic and the atmosphere is always special.

Zahara de los Atunes

Zahara de los Atunes is a quieter destination, famous for having one of the largest and best-kept beaches in all of Andalusia.

It’s the ideal place to watch the sunset in peace, and you have plenty of options for dinner by the sea. Without a doubt, it’s the perfect way to wrap up the second day of your route before getting some rest.

Day 3: Beaches and viewpoints

On the final day of the trip, we leave the villages behind to dive into the wilder side of nature in Cádiz.

La Breña Natural Park and the Barbate Marshes

You can easily reach the La Breña area by car. An incredible protected park because you have a pine forest that suddenly ends at a cliff edge over 100 metres high. We recommend parking near the Torre del Tajo; there’s a short path there that takes you right to the edge of the cliff, where the sea views will leave you speechless.

Trafalgar Lighthouse and the cliffs

The next stop is the Trafalgar Lighthouse in Los Caños de Meca. It’s a place with a lot of history, culture, and a very special energy. Walk along the road leading to the lighthouse and watch the waves crashing against the cliffs. It’s a breathtaking scene, especially if it’s a bit windy, definitely one of those experiences you won’t forget.

Quiet beaches for a stroll

To end the trip on a relaxed note, find one of the beaches in Zahora or the Roche Coves Calas de Roche. These are stretches of fine sand perfect for walking without the city crowds. It’s a moment to enjoy the sound of the sea and say a peaceful goodbye to the province before returning your car.
