Son Morroig. 4 km west of Deia.
West of Deia is Son Marroig, one of the estates of Austrian archduke Luis
Salvador (1847-1915), who arrived in Majorca as a young man and fell in
love with the place. Speaker of 14 languages and a prolific writer, the
archduke acquired estates and built great houses, mostly along the northwest
coast, which he then furnished with miradors at each spectacular viewpoint.
Now a museum, Son Marroig contains the archduke's collections of Mediterranean
pottery and ceramics, old Majorcan furniture, and paintings. From late
July through early October, the Deia International Festival holds classical
concerts here.
From the mirador you can see, nearly 1,000 ft below, Sa Foradada, a spectacular
rock peninsula pierced by a huge archway, beneath which the archduke moored
his yacht. A pathway, beginning near the cafe in the parking area, leads
down to Sa Foradada (1 hour down, 1 1/2 hours up). Four kilometers (2
1/2 mi) farther, behind the restaurant C'an Costa, on the right, is another
of the archduke's miradors, Ses Pites, named for the spiky cactus plants
that surround it.
